SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN NEHEMIAH 5:1-12 AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP

The increasing prevalence of socio-economic inequality, poor governance, and ethical leadership challenges has renewed scholarly interest in biblical leadership models capable of informing contemporary Christian leadership. This study examined the socio-economic and political development portrayed in Nehemiah 5:1–12 and evaluated its implications for contemporary Christian leadership. The study adopted a qualitative research design, employing the historical-grammatical and exegetical methods to interpret the biblical text. Data were obtained from secondary sources, including the Holy Bible, scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and commentaries, and were analysed using thematic content analysis. The study found that Nehemiah 5:1–12 addresses critical socio-economic and political issues, including poverty, indebtedness, economic exploitation, social inequality, abuse of power, and weak leadership accountability. It further revealed that Nehemiah responded through ethical leadership characterized by justice, integrity, transparency, moral courage, accountability, and practical socio-economic reforms that restored communal harmony. The study argues that Nehemiah's leadership model provides enduring principles for contemporary Christian leadership, particularly in promoting justice, servant leadership, ethical governance, responsible stewardship, and holistic community development. It concludes that authentic Christian leadership should transcend ecclesiastical administration by actively contributing to the moral, social, and economic transformation of society. The study recommends that Christian leaders strengthen ethical leadership practices, promote social justice, and integrate biblical leadership principles into leadership development and ministry practice to enhance the Church's contribution to sustainable development and ethical governance in contemporary society.
