PRIVATE SECTOR DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC RECOVERY IN CONFLICT-AFFECTED MANGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract

This study investigates private sector development and economic recovery in conflict-affected Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. Mangu is a local government area that has experienced severe communal violence, farmer-herder conflicts, and mass displacement in recent years. The conflict has devastated the local economy, destroyed livelihoods, and created a humanitarian crisis affecting over 19,000 displaced persons. The problem is that while humanitarian aid has provided temporary relief, there is limited understanding of how private sector development can drive sustainable economic recovery. This study used a descriptive survey research design. A sample of 200 respondents was selected from affected communities across Mangu LGA, including business owners, farmers, and displaced persons. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and key informant interviews. The data was analyzed using mean scores and chi-square tests. Findings showed that private sector activity has been severely disrupted by insecurity, with businesses closing and markets collapsing. However, there is strong demand for economic recovery through agricultural value chain development, infrastructure investment, and inclusive enterprise support. The study concludes that private sector development is essential for sustainable economic recovery in Mangu LGA. It recommends government investment in agricultural infrastructure, support for small and medium enterprises, and inclusive private sector engagement that benefits displaced persons and host communities.
